Abstract

Pregnancy (maternity) is one of the biological and spiritual phenomena that receives serious attention in the Qur'an. The term ḥaml and its derivatives are mentioned in various verses with diverse meanings, but this study focuses on the meaning of ḥaml as pregnancy and the human reproductive process.

This study aims to analyse the concept of pregnancy from the perspective of the Qur'an through a maudhu‘i (thematic) interpretation approach, as well as to relate it to the development of modern biology and contemporary issues surrounding pregnancy. The method used is a literature study by examining Qur'anic verses related to pregnancy, classical and contemporary interpretations, the Prophet's hadith, and scientific literature in the fields of reproductive biology and contemporary fiqh.

The results of the study show that the Qur'an views pregnancy as a divine trust that is full of worship, sacrifice, and glory, especially for a mother. In addition, the Qur'an's description of foetal development is in line with modern scientific findings, which reinforces the Qur'an's position as a source of guidance that is relevant across time. This study also confirms that Islam provides ethical and legal guidance on contemporary issues such as contraception, vasectomy, tubectomy, and abortion, with the main principle of maintaining the welfare and safety of the soul. Thus, this study is expected to enrich the scientific knowledge of Qur'anic interpretation and serve as a reference in understanding pregnancy from a theological, scientific, and Islamic legal perspective.
